Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology turns fiber optic cable into a smart sensor, generating in real-time, actionable information about the immediate physical surroundings of specific locations over great distances. With all of today’s focus on improving the resiliency and reliability of the electric grid and ensuring the security of critical infrastructure, distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technology should be in every utility’s technology toolbox for meeting these challenges. This presentation will cover the different types of DFOS technology: Distributed Temperature (DTS), Strain (DSS) and Acoustic (DAS) Sensing. It will focus on the key use cases and benefits enabled by the technology including: - Monitoring of temperature and strain in land or subsea power cable and other critical assets. - Localization of faults in power cables - Detection of activity along cable routes or critical facilities for security & proactive damage prevention. For these & other applications, DFOS technology offers clear benefits to the power industry. Presentation will include real-world examples as well as recent developments in DFOS technology and its employment globally.
