Utility 4G and 5G Private Networks – Matching Spectrum Selection to Targeted Applications

The availability of spectrum and technology options for private wireless networks has expanded rapidly, and utilities now have an increasing number of innovative options to reduce operating costs while increasing reliability, efficiency and security of operations. Utilities acquiring 4G or 5G spectrum rights generally plan to operate multiple applications over a single private LTE or 5G network. This session will explore which applications are best suited to which available 4G or 5G spectrum bands and recommend applications-oriented approaches to analyzing the spectrum acquisition decision. Example applications will include field area networks (FANs), SCADA for Distribution Automation (D/A), direct-to-meter communications and substation networks. Factors discussed will include required throughput, density and range.

While the range of applications is large and growing, different frequency bands are usually better suited to different applications due to factors including range, capacity, technology and cost. Spectrum alternatives will include Bands 48, 54, 103 and 106.
