Under the auspices of hardening Smart Grid Infrastructure, we will present a basic Reference Architecture of PON vs Application (particularly FTTH vs Smart Grid) that includes: • Utility PON-enabled Devices (Smart meters, LTE Radios, Field Control Systems) • Fiber connected Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and customer systems We will also describe how to achieve resiliency in the communications infrastructure in the context of the following: • Resiliency Intrinsic to Fiber/Cable Types (EMF, bend resistance, deployment implications, etc) • Resiliency Intrinsic to PON devices (determinism, security/encyption, performance features) • Architecting the physical cable plant for resiliency (Failover scenarios, splitter positioning, optical power budgeting, etc) • Real-time Monitoring of PON Physical Infrastructure Lastly we will cover the benefits/“soft metrics” of PON technology: • Co-existence of PON generations (GPON, XPON, NGPON, etc) & migration paths of cable plant • OPEX/Support/management costs associated GPON vs alternate communication infrastructure
